Fans have been long
urging ICC to give Test status to more teams. It seems that the suggestions by
countless fans have finally been heard by the ICC. It is to be noted that ICC
have appointed Chief Executives Committee (CEC)
which works for creating structures for Test, ODI and T20 cricket that
give meaning to every international match played. The committee have have some
proposals to make which they will submit to the ICC Board in the next round of
meetings in April.
The CEC
met for a two-day meeting in Dubai which ended on Friday. The committee's
proposal includes having a two year Test league. If ICC approves there proposal
then we would witness a two-year Test league comprising a 9/3 format in which
the top nine Test countries compete among themselves and against the three
lower-ranked teams from 2019 onwards. It is to be noted that
the CEC has approved a three-year, 13-team ODI league, which work as a
qualifier for the 50-over World Cup, and a system of regional qualification
tournaments through which teams attempt to qualify for a World T20.
If the
proposal of the committee is accepted by the ICC, we might see teams like
Afghanistan and Ireland playing Test match cricket soon.
